The program, organized by Teens Hub Media with support from Splash FM, DSI and other reputable organizations had the theme “Elimination of Female Genital Mutilation”. It held on Wednesday the 6th of February 2019 at Molete Baptist College Ibadan (MBCI) with attendance from secondary school students within Ibadan.
The event started with a Spoken Word Presentation by Ogooluwa which was followed by a drama presentation by the Splash FM Crew. Speakers at the event include Mrs Judith Oluwakoya of Women Research and Development Centre (WORDOC); Mrs Aderonke Olutayo, UNICEF’s South-West Consultant on FGM; Dr Ebunlomo Walker, Coordinator of Child Protection Network (CPN); Mr Aderibigbe, a representative of the Oyo State Ministry of Education and Mrs Balkis Olawoyin from the Gender Office, Oyo State Ministry of Health.
The students were enlightened about the origin of Female Genital Mutilation and in the course of the program, the different myths surrounding FGM were debunked. They were also educated on the physical, emotional, mental and psychological implications of Female Genital Mutilation.
The students were advised to speak out in the event of Female Genital Mutilation in their environment. This has been made easy by a law in Oyo State that makes it a crime to mutilate females. The workshop according to the speakers is geared towards the goal of reducing the rate of FGM to zero by 2030.
