On 18th of December, 2014, the United Nations at its General Assembly declared 15th of July as the World Youth Skills Day. The aim of this day is to generate greater awareness of and discussion on the importance of technical, vocational education and training and the development of other skills relevant to both local and global economies. It is hoped that it will contribute to reducing unemployment and underemployment among the youth across the globe and as well highlight youth skills development, to draw attention to the critical need for marketable skills.
In recognition and celebration of this day, DSIgate, driven by the passion to build the economy, integrate human knowledge and support people to accomplish desired goals, partnered with ‘Derayo Vocational Institute to mark the day with two elaborate events. One was “ FREE SKILLS ACQUISITION” while the other was tagged “FLYIN30” which both took place on the 15th of July, 2019.
In order to achieve maximum result, World Youth Skill Day held in two locations with different event, in the city of Ibadan; Adamasingba Stadium and Oja Entrepreneurial Hall, Heritage Mall, Ibadan respectively.
The “SKILLS ACQUISITION” event at Adamasingba Stadium involved secondary and tertiary school students, traders, young and old, learn and showcase skills, including Photography; Accessories Making; Crochet; Shoemaking; Bead Making; Textile & Design (Tie & Dye). Scholarships were awarded to best participant of each skill, by the trainers. The event was covered by several Media Outfits.
The second part of the day’s celebration held at Heritage Mall, Dugbe, Ibadan. The day recorded presence of personalities from different walks of life, divers skills were displayed by participant who contested for the 100,000 cash Prize.
The event showcased reputable and distinguished personalities in the society, in order to achieve credible results we have as panelist the likes of Afouda of ThirtyTwo FM, Kolade Dominate of Splash FM, Charles Alade of Premier FM, Aderayo Animashaun of Derayo Vocational Ltd, Rolake Bello of Fresh FM and Omooba Abiola Ogunyinka of Darolls Nig. Ltd. The program was hosted by Anointed Mallam of Petals FM who made sure the participants and attendees had a very good day.
The concept behind the event been tagged “FLYIN30” is for participants to exhibit what they can do in a space time of 30 minutes, thereby standing a chance to win cash and/or consolidating prizes. Going by this, the participants performed their skills in thirty minutes after which the judges carefully accessed what they all exhibited and winners were credibly and logically selected. Some of the skills exhibited include: Culinary Art (cooking); Sports (Football); Art/Craft (Drawing, Body Painting, Paper Crafts, Wristband, Ankara Jewelries, Slippers, Bag) and Fashion/Beauty (Fashion Design, Make-Up).
The day rounded up with a large number of participants happily smiling back home in fulfillment of their goals for the day. Some of the event attendees also had a few goodies to dance home with, with some winning cash prizes, while some had the privilege to learn a skill for Free. Cash Prize winners among the participants include Oshifodunrin Damilola, Keshinro Odunayo, Longe Bolanle, Michael Ejiroghene, Akoson Alison Favor, Miracle Ndikom, Ayodele F. Adeyemi, Victoria Omotoso, Aiyedun O. Elizabeth, Ishola K. Adebola, Ogunsesan Adetola Sekinat, Anifowose Kehinde Quadri and Michael Peter Taiye.
It is therefore imperative we understand the importance of a skill in Nation Building, though young people are only given cut flowers, when they should be taught to grow their own plants. Remember, being a Youth is a talent, but a perishable talent if not properly groomed. As youths we learn,but when we become aged we understand!
